Fire Pit Styles and Fuel Options

The right fire pit depends on your garden, how you plan to use it, and how permanent you want the feature to be. MacColl & Stokes build across the full range.

Wood-burning fire bowls

are the most versatile option and suit informal garden settings. They require clearance from structures and overhanging trees, but work well as a standalone feature in most garden sizes.

Gas fire tables

deliver instant flame with no ash and no smoke. They suit patios and regular entertaining use. A qualified gas engineer carries out the connection, which is included in our process.

Built-in fire pits with seating

are a full construction project: a masonry or timber surround with integrated bench seating designed and built as a single feature.

Sunken fire pits

sit recessed into the ground or patio level for a clean, integrated finish. The flame feels like part of the garden rather than something placed in it. This option suits larger gardens with a defined layout and a level area to cut into.

Smokeless fire pits

run on bio-ethanol or approved smokeless fuel. They are well suited to smaller gardens or properties with neighbours close by where smoke is a consideration.

Corten steel fire bowls

are a premium standalone option. The steel weathers to a rust finish that suits natural garden settings and pairs well with Scottish planting and stone.

Six Ways to Build Your Fire Pit Space

A professionally built fire pit transforms how you use your garden. It extends the season, creates a natural gathering point, and adds a permanent feature that grows with your outdoor space.

Fire pit with wraparound timber bench seating

gives you a social, functional setup that doubles as garden seating year-round. A U or C-shaped bench is the most popular configuration for families and regular use.

Fire pit as zone anchor

positions the feature to define an outdoor living area within a larger garden. The fire pit gives the zone a focal point and draws the space together.

Fire pit under a pergola

works with a gas option only and requires proper ventilation clearance. If you are planning a covered structure, consider pairing the fire pit with a pergola from the outset so the design accounts for both.

Sunken fire pit on an existing patio

creates minimal disruption to the layout. The pit is cut into the surface and finished flush, so it reads as part of the patio rather than an addition.

Fire pit with outdoor kitchen or garden bar

pairs well with an outdoor kitchen or garden bar to create a complete outdoor entertaining area. Many clients build these features together as part of a single project.

Natural stone fire circle

uses dry-stone or mortar construction and suits rural properties and older stone homes common across Central Scotland. A sandstone or granite finish looks intentional rather than added-on.

The MacColl & Stokes Difference

With over 40 years landscaping experience, we have built up an extensive portfolio of work and pride ourselves in being able to turn our client's visions into a reality. With a wealth of knowledge in garden design and construction, we know we can create the perfect environment for you.

We design & build

We are not a supplier or kit installer. Every fire pit is planned for the specific garden and built from scratch.

Full outdoor space experience

We understand how a fire pit fits into a wider garden design. Most of our fire pit projects are part of a larger landscaping build.

Materials that handle Scottish weather

Every material choice is made with Scottish rainfall, frost, and temperature range in mind, not the drier conditions that most off-the-shelf garden building specifications assume.

Gas connections done right

We work with qualified Gas Safe engineers for fire table installs. The connection is safe, certified, and compliant.

Serving Glasgow and Central Scotland. Edinburgh, Stirling, Bearsden, Newton Mearns, Bothwell, and surrounding areas.

Fire Pit FAQs

Here are some frequently asked questions when considering a garden fire pit.

Do I need planning permission for a fire pit in Scotland?

Can you build a fire pit on an existing patio?

What fuel should I use in my fire pit?

Generally no for a freestanding pit. A permanent structure close to a boundary may need a check. For definitive guidance on your property, visit mygov.scot.

Yes. We assess the surface and build a suitable base or modify the patio if needed. The site visit covers this before any work begins.

It depends on the type. Wood-burning pits perform best with kiln-dried hardwood such as oak, ash, or birch. Gas fire pits require no fuel handling. Smokeless options run on bio-ethanol or approved smokeless fuel.

Can a gas fire pit be installed under a pergola?

How long does installation take?

Yes, with proper ventilation clearance. We design the setup with a qualified gas engineer to make sure it is safe and compliant.

Most fire pit builds complete in one to two days. Larger projects with integrated seating or a gas connection typically take two to three days.
