Garden Water Feature Projects
Water Feature styles we design and build
The right water feature depends on the garden, the available space, and how you want it to work within the wider design.

Wall-mounted water features
send water from a spout or blade over a wall face into a basin below. They suit smaller gardens, courtyard spaces, and contemporary builds well, and can be lit for evening effect.
Garden ponds
hold still or gently aerated water with planting and optional fish. They suit larger gardens and can be formal, with a geometric shape and raised edge, or naturalistic, with planted margins and wildlife-friendly edges.
Garden fountains
can be freestanding or built in. Jets or spouts create sound and movement, and they suit patios, formal gardens, and entrance areas.
Pondless waterfalls
cascade water over stone or slate into a hidden reservoir below. There is no open water surface, which keeps maintenance low and makes this a popular choice for family gardens where safety matters.
Raised pools
are masonry or rendered structures holding a still water surface. They are often paired with seating walls and suit formal garden designs and courtyard settings particularly well.
Stream features
use a shallow channel cut through the garden with gentle flow. They work well in sloped gardens where water can move naturally from a high point to a low one.

Six Ways to use a Water Feature in your garden
A well-designed water feature adds movement, sound, and a focal point that transforms how a garden feels.
Courtyard focal point
A wall blade or spout into a stone trough creates a compact, high-impact feature where space is limited. It works well in enclosed spaces where a larger feature would feel out of scale.
Alongside a patio or decking
A raised pool with a seating wall creates a combined feature that earns its place year-round. It pairs naturally with a decking or paved patio area where you want a focal point at garden level.
Wildlife pond in a larger garden
Naturalistic planting, gently sloping edges, and no pump required. A well-positioned wildlife pond attracts birds, insects, and amphibians and needs very little intervention once established.
Transition between garden zones
A pondless stream or cascade marks the change between a lawn area and a patio or planting bed, giving the garden a sense of movement and structure.
Entrance or approach feature
A wall fountain or raised pool at a garden entrance creates immediate character and sets the tone for the rest of the space.
Integrated with an outdoor kitchen or garden bar
The sound of moving water works well beside an entertaining area. Many clients include a water feature when building an outdoor kitchen or garden bar as part of a wider outdoor living project.

Initial Discussion
Let's have a chat about your garden space, specification, design aspirations and budget.

Site Visit
We assess the garden, identify the best position based on sunlight, drainage, and how the space is used. For ponds, we check ground conditions and any drainage constraints specific to the plot.
Design Consultation
We agree feature type, materials, size, pump or gravity-fed options, lighting, and surrounding planting before any work begins.

Groundwork
Excavation, liner installation or masonry base, pipework and pump housing where required.

Construction
Stonework, rendering, or timber built to the final finish before water is introduced.

Commissioning and Handover
The pump is set up and tested, water quality is checked, and we provide full maintenance guidance before we leave.

Why Glasgow Homeowners choose MacColl & Stokes
With over 40 years landscaping experience, we have built up an extensive portfolio of work and pride ourselves in being able to turn our client's visions into a reality. With a wealth of knowledge in garden design and construction, we know we can create the perfect environment for you.
Permanent builds, not kits
Every water feature we install is designed for the specific garden and built to last. We do not drop in pre-fabricated units.
Materials suited to Scottish conditions
We specify stone, renders, and pumps rated for outdoor use in wet Scottish winters. Longevity matters more than low initial cost.
Full garden integration
We understand how a water feature fits into a wider planting and landscaping scheme. Most of our water feature projects are part of a larger garden design.
Drainage expertise
Scotland's rainfall means drainage planning is part of every project. We account for overflow and surrounding ground conditions from the outset, not as an afterthought.

Garden Water Feature FAQs
Here are some frequently asked questions when considering a garden water feature.
Do garden water features need planning permission in Scotland?
Generally no. Features built within permitted development rules do not require consent. Larger structures close to a boundary or in a conservation area may need a check. For definitive guidance on your property, visit mygov.scot.
How much maintenance does a water feature need?
It depends on the type. Pondless features and fountains need occasional pump cleaning and top-ups. Wildlife ponds need an annual tidy. We provide full maintenance guidance at handover.
Can you install a water feature in a small garden?
Yes. A wall-mounted feature or compact pondless design works well in small spaces. We assess the available footprint at the site visit before recommending a type.
Do water features work in Scottish winters?
Can a water feature attract wildlife?
Yes, with the right pump and materials. We specify frost-resistant stone and submersible pumps rated for cold climates. Most features run year-round, and we advise on winterising where needed.
A naturalistic pond with planted margins and a gently sloped edge will attract birds, frogs, and insects. We can design specifically for wildlife if that is a priority for you.
