Pergola Styles and Materials

The right pergola depends on how you want to use the space, how much weather protection you need, and how the structure will sit within the wider garden.

Open timber pergolas

use a classic slatted roof frame in softwood or hardwood. They provide partial shade and a structure for climbing plants, and suit most garden styles. This is the most common starting point for homeowners who want a defined outdoor area without full enclosure.

Lean-to pergolas

fix to the house wall on one side and extend living space outward. They suit rear gardens where the structure connects directly to the back of the property and works as an extension of the interior.

Steel or aluminium pergolas

use a powder-coated metal frame for a contemporary look. They are more durable than timber in exposed positions and suit modern builds and minimalist garden styles.

Covered pergolas

use a solid or semi-solid roof, typically polycarbonate, felt, EPDM, or glass. They provide weather protection and are well suited to Scotland's wet climate, where a purely open frame limits how much of the year the space can realistically be used.

Freestanding pergolas

stand independently in the garden and can frame a fire pit area, outdoor kitchen, or garden bar away from the main building. They give you more flexibility on position and orientation.

Bioclimatic pergolas

have a louvred aluminium roof with adjustable slats that control light and ventilation. They are a premium option for homeowners who want full flexibility over the space in all weather conditions.

Six Ways to use a Pergola in your garden

A well-built pergola defines outdoor space, provides shelter, and gives climbing plants, lighting, and garden features a structure to anchor them.

Over an outdoor kitchen

A pergola over an outdoor kitchen provides cover for cooking and dining and extends its usable season significantly in Scotland. It is one of the most practical pairings we build.

Around a fire pit area

An open or semi-covered pergola frames the space around a fire pit and defines the seating zone. Where the pergola is covered, a gas fire pit is the right choice for safety and ventilation.

Over a hot tub or seating area

A covered pergola provides privacy and weather cover over a hot tub or outdoor seating area, and pairs naturally with a decking installation underneath.

Over a garden bar

A covered pergola creates an outdoor room feel for a garden bar and shelters seating from rain, making the space genuinely usable through most of the year.

As a garden entrance or walkway

An archway or tunnel pergola along a path creates structure and supports climbing plants such as wisteria, roses, or honeysuckle. It gives the garden a sense of arrival.

As a standalone garden room

A fully covered, walled pergola can function as a light outdoor room, an alternative to a full garden room for homeowners who want to stay connected to the garden rather than enclosed within a building.

Foundation Work

Post footings or concrete bases are set at the correct depth for the soil conditions. Correct foundations are where most pergola failures start, and we invest time here upfront.

Why Glasgow Homeowners choose MacColl & Stokes

With over 40 years landscaping experience, we have built up an extensive portfolio of work and pride ourselves in being able to turn our client's visions into a reality. With a wealth of knowledge in garden design and construction, we know we can create the perfect environment for you.

Built on site, not assembled from kits

Every pergola is constructed to the specific dimensions and design of the garden. We do not adapt pre-fabricated products to fit.

Integrated with your wider garden

Most of our pergola projects are part of a larger outdoor living build, with outdoor kitchens, fire pits, decking, and planting all designed to work together from the start.

Scotland-ready materials and roofing

We specify timber treatments, fixings, and roofing materials suited to Scotland's wet winters and wind exposure. A pergola built for the south of England will not perform the same way here.

Correct foundations

Post footings set at the right depth for the soil conditions is where we invest time upfront. It is where most pergola failures begin.

Serving Glasgow and Central Scotland. Edinburgh, Stirling, Bearsden, Newton Mearns, Bothwell, and surrounding areas.

Garden Pergola FAQs

Here are some frequently asked questions when considering a pergola.

Do I need planning permission for a pergola in Scotland?

What is the best wood for a pergola in Scotland?

How long does a pergola last?

Most pergolas fall under permitted development and do not require consent, provided they meet size and position rules. A pergola covering more than 50% of the garden, sitting close to a boundary, or attached to a listed building may need a check. For definitive guidance on your property, visit mygov.scot.

Pressure-treated softwood is the most common choice for value and durability. For a premium finish, hardwoods such as oak or iroko perform better long-term in wet conditions. We advise on the right option for each project at the consultation stage.

A well-built timber pergola with correct treatment and foundations will last 15 to 20 years or more. Metal frames last longer. Annual inspection and re-treatment of timber extends the lifespan significantly.

Can a pergola be used year-round in Scotland?

How long does installation take?

An open timber frame has seasonal limits. A covered pergola with polycarbonate, felt, or glass roofing and integrated heating can be used comfortably year-round in most Scottish weather conditions.

Most pergola builds complete in two to three days. Larger structures with roofing, lighting, and integrated features typically take three to five days.
